Holi is celebrated by burning a fire which is symbolic for destroying evil and letting go of the past. The entire festivities last for a week, starting with a Palki or a procession of local deities (Gramdevta) from the temples. People dance with happiness during the procession to showcase their devotion for the god. At night, palm tree leaves, dry branches of trees are buried in the ground and burnt. This tradition is also called Holika Dhahan.
Puranpoli which is a favourite and special Maharashtrian delicacy is offered to the flames. People have fun, dance, sing and also mischievously call out each other’s names.

Finally, arrives Rangpanchmi which is the celebration of colours. People of all castes and races come together and smear each other’s faces with colours. These colours are symbols of unity and diversity of our Hindu culture.
