Shravan month of Hindu calendar marks the beginning of festivities. Out of these festival Narali Purnima which is also known as Shravani Purnima, falls on the full moon day. In Marathi, Naral means coconut and purnima means full moon day. Coconut which is a significant part of konkani food culture also plays a key role in these festivities. 

This festival signals the start of fishing season and the end of monsoon. Central to the festivities are the coconut offerings. Coconuts are decorated with vermillion and turmeric and then devotees offer these coconuts to the sea as a gesture of gratitude and seek blessings for a prosperous fishing season. This practice is rooted in the belief that appeasing Varuna, the sea god, ensures the safety and success of the fishermen. 

The celebrations include folk dances, traditional music performances, and community gatherings. These gathering serves as an opportunity for the  community to come together, share stories, and celebrate their heritage.

Food is an integral part of culture and heritage of India and one of the reasons we eagerly wait for any festival is the special delicacy which is prepared specifically for the festival. During Narali Purnima, many coconut-based dishes are cooked in Konkani households.

Some of these delicacies are:

1. Narali Bhaat: Narali bhaat is a fragrant and flavorful dish cooked with rice, grated coconut, jaggery, and ghee. It's a harmonious blend of sweet and savory, symbolizing the joyful nature of the festival.

2. Coconut-based Curries: In addition to sweets, coconut-based curries are also popular during Narali Purnima. Dishes like coconut-based fish or prawn curry showcase the culinary versatility of coconut and the bounty of the sea.

3. Naralachi Vadi: This sweet coconut barfi is a quintessential treat prepared for Narali Purnima. Made from freshly grated coconut, jaggery, and a hint of cardamom, naralachi vadi is a mouthwatering dessert that perfectly encapsulates the essence of the festival.
