Contribution of Sindhudurg in making of Swarajya

Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is one of the greatest heroes India has seen. The fact that he was born in the soil of Maharashtra makes us proud. He was a great king, even greater warrior and the most compassionate not only towards his people but also those who belonged to his enemy’s state. We all know he was practically the founder of navy in India.
He knew he would never won wars on land due to the gigantic army of Mughals. Hence he decided to make the most of sea channels that surrounded the Land of Maratha Empire. Out of 5 sea forts that he built during his region, Sindhudurg remains to be one of the largest and formidable forts he built.

Sindhudurg fort which is now a major tourist attraction for people visiting Malvan or Konkan region, was originally built as a counter point for European merchants and to curb the rise of Siddhi of Janjira. This fort is an architectural wonder which continues to mesmerize architects and engineers of this generation even after over 300 years. Be it the secret passageway built under the sea, a camouflaged main gate which cannot be found out by a new outsider, or water reservoirs that do not parch even during harsh summers. Sindhudurg fort is a wonderous creation by the greatest king this land has even seen or will ever see!
